Science Roadshow

On Monday the year 5 and 6's of Kaniere school went to the Science Roadshow. The Science Roadshow was held at Hokitika Primary school. We got there just in time for our first show. Our first show was about kitchen supply's. There were also other schools there with us as well.

First of all at our first show they had squeezed a red cabbage into 5 tubs then they added random stuff to them but left one tube to see what happens. when they added the stuff to them it changed the colour of them. So cabbage juice is purple and imagine it changing colours to colours like blue, green, yellow and dark blue. At last they added a chemical that changed the colour to clear.

After our 1st show it was time to have a look around. First of all we had to grab a little card that had a challenge on it you had to find all three things on it and then you would write your name on it and if you get picked out of a box you got a prize. The first thing that I did was I went to the wind tunnel. It was fun because it blows air on you but it doesn't blow you away and it fells really nice. I had a bit more of a look around. After that we got told to go and sit back down because they were going to do our second show.

In the second show we learnt about air pressure. The funnest bit was when Mrs Hickford was nice enough to volunteer to hop in a big plastic bag and get the air sucked out of the plastic bag. She was showing us her opening and closing her hand to show us how hard it got to open and close her hand when all of the air got sucked out. They also showed us some really hard ways to crack an egg. Like if you put your pointing finger on the top and your thump on the bottom.

Have you ever gone to a Science Roadshow?

Did you like it?

What did you learn when you went?

Do you want to go to a Science Roadshow?

  1. Kia ora Paige,
Ka pai on creating this blogpost and sharing with us what a fantastic time you had at the Science Roadshow!
The first show sounds amazing, and I honestly can’t believe that they were able to change the colour of cabbage juice just by adding other ingredients!
Do you know what ingredients they added to make the tubes change colour?
How long did it take for the reactions to occur?
Do you think this experiment would work using green cabbage juice instead of purple cabbage juice? Why/why not?
It would be awesome if you could reply to this comment and let me know!
You mentioned how you did a challenge where you had to find three different things. What were these three things, and did you manage to find them?
You also mentioned how during the second show Mrs Hickford volunteered to get the air sucked out of a bag while she was standing in it. I can imagine how funny this must have been to watch, and it was so interesting to hear about the opening and closing of her fist both inside, and outside, of the plastic bag!
I have never been to a Science Roadshow before, but after reading this post and hearing about all of the fantastic things you got to be a part of I would definitely like to attend one in the future!
    Keep up the great work!
    Nga mihi
